I am passionate about seeing everyone reach their full potential and meet their goals. I remember my first CrossFit WOD back in December of 2008 it was Fight Gone Bad. Like many crossfitters, it was the beginning of my journey into a new culture of exercise and fitness. Thinking I knew what being is shape meant and having an extensive sports background, I was however, becoming the typical gym junkie. CrossFit has given me a new lifeline. I feel better then ever, even compared to the height of my sports career, and yet I am ten years older! I keep saying to myself “if only I would have known”. My passion is to change peoples lives one at a time by bringing true fitness and health.
Phil has CrossFit Level 1, CrossFit Nutrition, CrossFit Barbell, CrossFit Endurance, and is a constant student of CrossFit methodology. Phil is proud to be working with the Drayton Valley Thunder as their strength and conditioning coach. Phil with his wife Cynthia are the owners of CrossFit DV and live in the Drayton Valley area with their three kids who are all avid CrossFitters.
A few years ago I had a friend who taught fitness classes that would kick my butt and challenge me every time. When she moved, I found myself without a workout partner and struggled to get myself motivated. I tried going to the gym by myself and went to a few other fitness classes but nothing felt right. I found myself more willing to blow off the gym and go for coffee instead. By doing this, I started to feel weak and unfit, and was frustrated that I couldn’t find anything that would keep me interested and motivated.
One day I saw an ad for Crossfit and it peaked my interest. I went to my first class and was hooked. It was hard but extremely rewarding in the fact that I was able to get through it. I felt totally accomplished. I loved the fact that I didn’t have to spend an hour doing the same boring thing. Workouts, whether they lasted 4 minutes or 24 minutes, left me feeling like I actually did something to improve my body and happy to know that I could do it.
The other aspect that appealed to me were all the other people who made sweat angels along side me. After completing a workout together, the sense of community from fellow crossfitters is amazing. Having others understand how tough the work was and being able to talk about different parts of the workout with them is fun. Comments like, “I can’t believe he threw in a 21-15-9 of burpees and wallballs after that workout!” don’t make sense to non-crossfitters, but once you do it, you get it, and it’s nice to have people to relate to.
After my first few workouts I tried to learn all I could about Crossfit. I watched tons of youtube videos and was inspired and amazed by the work capacity of the athletes in the crossfit world. I wanted to share my love of crossfit with everyone and constantly told friends and family about my workouts. My sister had to listen to me yak about my daily WOD’s as I tried to convince her to try it. Finally she did, and is now just as fanatical as I am about it ![]()
We took our Level 1 Certification together and are excited to introduce more people to the world of Crossfit and help them reach their fitness goals as we continue to reach ours.

I hated working out. It was boring, it was lonely, and I never really felt like I got much benefit from it. I would leave the gym feeling glad it was over rather than any feeling of accomplishment. My sister (that girl in the pic above me) had been prattling on about CrossFit for months. Finally after a year of being ‘retired’ from a 10 year professional golfer, I decided to give it a try. Since that day I have been learning everything I can about CrossFit and working my butt off to improve as an athlete. The fitness benefits and sense of accomplishment are like nothing I had ever experienced before, but what really has gotten it’s grip on me is the sense of community, connection and belonging you develop with your fellow crossfitters. There is something about battling through WOD’s together that really bonds people. Perhaps it is because my history is in an individual sport that the sense of team that is created within a CrossFit box is especially meaningful to me; I am not sure, but whatever it is, it has me loving CrossFit which is why I wanted to get my Level 1 Certificate and make it a bigger part of my life. Had I discovered CrossFit earlier in my pro career, there is no question in my mind that I would have been a better player, but going to CrossFit boxes all over the country would have provided that sense of community that is often lacking in golf.
I have seen first hand what CrossFit has done for a very dear friend of mine and to see him capable of doing things he would have never even attempted before is inspiring and makes me a wholehearted believer.

I have always been active whether in sports, taking classes, or going to the gym. I thought I was living a healthy, active lifestyle, and I was, but not to its fullest potential! I was a trail runner running in the DeathRace, 5 Peaks, and Sinister 7 trail runs. A year ago I was introduced to CrossFit. Being the kind of person that loves to work hard and push myself, I fell in love with CrossFit after my first WOD. I worked hard for a few months getting stronger and faster when Phil said to me: “You are competing in sectionals.” My response was: “No.” He insisted, so we compromised. I said I would train and see how I felt when it was time to register. I started eating a Paleolithic diet and trained harder than ever, as sectionals were only 4 weeks away! Still feeling I wasn’t quite ready, however, Phil gave me no choice but to register for sectionals. Words cannot describe what it was like to compete! It was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life, but it was there where I truly learned what CrossFit was about. From then my obsession with CrossFit began! Watching, reading, and learning as much as I could about CrossFit I strive to be stronger and faster so I can take another shot at sectionals 2011!
I am now a Level 1 certified CrossFit coachas well as Certified in CrossFit Olympic Weightlifting. I am excited to share my love of CrossFit with others, to help people achieve goals, and to see the excitment on their faces when it happens. Crossfit has changed my life, and I am anxious to be part of the lives that will be changed at CrossFit DV!
